Corn Dhokla: World Vegetarian Day Spcl

It's World Vegetarian's Day today. So, why not start the day with an awesome vegetarian breakfast? Being the most important meal of the day, your breakfast should be laden with nutrients. Therefore, we have a perfect breakfast recipe for you this morning.

Dhokla is a popular dish from the vegetarian state of Gujarat. It is a steamed cake which is fluffy in texture and melts in your mouth as soon as you taste it. And more importantly it is one of the healthiest dish to start your day with. Usually, dhokla is prepared with gram flour. But here is a twist in the recipe. We are using maize flour and corn kernels to add the healthy touch to our breakfast recipe.

The dish tastes absolutely amazing. So, we should definitely give it a try. Here goes the recipe of corn dhokla.

Serves: 3-4
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • Maize flour- 1 cup
  • Low fat curd- ½ cup (sour)
  • Corn kernels- ½ cup
  • Ginger paste- ½ tsp
  • Green chilli paste- ½ tsp
  • Hing (asafoetida)- a pinch
  • Sugar- 2tsp
  • Lemon juice- 1tsp
  • Fruit salt- ½ tsp
  • Oil- 2tsp
  • Salt-as per taste
  • Warm water- ½ cup

For tempering

  • Mustard seeds- 1tsp
  • Sesame seeds- 1tsp
  • Hing- a pinch
  • Oil- 1tsp
  • Coriander leaves- 1tbsp (chopped for garnish)

Procedure

  1. Mix the maize flour, warm water and curd in a deep bottomed mixing bowl.
  2. Beat the mixture well to make a smooth batter. Keep it aside for 30 minutes.
  3. After 30 minutes, add the corn kernels, ginger paste, green chilli paste, hing, sugar, lemon juice, one teaspoon of oil, fruit salt to the batter and mix well.
  4. Grease a bowl with one teaspoon of oil and pour the batter into it.
  5. Cover it with a tight lid and steam it in a steamer or pressure cooker for about 15 minutes on low flame.
  6. Once done, remove the bowl from heat and keep it aside.
  7. Then heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, sesame seeds and hing to it. Fry for about a minute.
  8. Then switch off the flame and pour this mixture over the prepared dhoklas.
  9. Garnish the dhoklas with chopped coriander leaves.

Yummy corn dhoklas are ready to be served. Enjoy this delicious vegetarian breakfast delight with mint or tamarind chutney.
