Naan Khatai: Diwali Snack Recipe

As it is the festive season, you must be trying your hands in the kitchen to prepare some aromatic and delicious delicacies. While Diwali which is the upcoming festival is all about sweets and snacks, you can try some delicious recipes especially for Diwali.

You might get a sweet tooth and get bored easily so it is always good to prepare some salty snacks alongside so as to provide some variety on the plate and taste buds. Cookies are very commonly prepared to serve guests and relatives who visit your house during Diwali.

When we talk about cookies, the famous Indian style butter biscuits or cookies is, naan khatai. Also known as nan khatai, there are many flavours that you can try. From chocolate naan khatai to the coconut one, the Indian style cookies can be a real treat for snack lovers. Here is the recipe to prepare the basic naan khatai and treat your guests this Diwali.

Naan Khatai: Diwali Snack Recipe

Serves: 10-15 small pieces
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 30-35 minutes

Ingredients

  • Maida- 1 cup
  • Unsalted ghee/ butter- ½ cup
  • Powdered sugar- ½ cup
  • Cardamom powder- a pinch
  • Baking powder- ½ tsp
  • Pistachios- 4-5
  • Almonds- 4-5- halved
  • Salt- a pinch

Procedure

  • In a bowl, mix powdered sugar with ghee or butter. Cream together till the mixture becomes fluffy and creamy.
  • In another bowl, add dry ingredients namely flour, cardamom powder, baking powder and salt together. Mix well.
  • Now in the creamy mixture, slowly add the dry ingredients slowly and keep mixing. Now knead it to make a soft dough.
  • Cover the dough with a cloth piece and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes.
  • Pre heat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 C).
  • Grease your palms with ghee or butter. Now make small gooseberry sized balls of the dough. Smoothen with your palm and shape it. You can even use a cookie cutter to get the shape.
  • Now slowly place them on a cooking sheet at some distance so that the cookies do not stick to each other. Also the cookies will expand while baking so be a little careful while placing them.
  • Press a pistachio and almond on the top of the cookie and bake at 300 degrees for 12-15 minutes till the surface of the cookie turns light golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool.
  • Once the cookies cool completely, take them out gently so that they do not break.
  • Store in an air tight container and use as a snack with tea or coffee.
