Goan Prawn Balchao Recipe

The main ingredient of the recipe is the special 'masala paste' which is prepared with a blend of spices, a dash of tamarind and some vinegar. This adds to the tangy taste in this recipe. The vinegar helps to preserve this dish for a longer period of time when refrigerated. So, you can eat Prawn Balchao both as a side dish as well as a pickle.

Goan Prawn Balchao Recipe

Ingredients

  • Prawns- 500gms (medium sized)
  • Onions- 4 (finely chopped)
  • Ginger- 1 inch piece (sliced)
  • Garlic- 6 pods (finely chopped)
  • Curry leaves- 8-10
  • Salt- as per taste
  • Oil- 2tbsp

For Masala Paste

  • Kashmiri red chillies- 10
  • Ginger- 1 inch piece
  • Garlic- 6 pods
  • Cumin seeds- 2tsp
  • Coriander seeds- 1tbsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1tsp
  • Tamarind- a small ball
  • Vinegar- 2tbsp

Procedure

  1. Remove the shell and clean the prawns thoroughly under running water.
  2. Marinate the prawns with turmeric powder, salt and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  3. Grind all the ingredients together listed under 'masala paste' in a grinder, into a thick paste.
  4. Heat one tablespoon of oil and fry the prawns in it for 10 minutes on a low flame till it turns golden brown in colour.
  5. Once done, transfer the prawns to a plate and keep it aside.
  6. Heat one tablespoon of oil in a pan. Fry the curry leaves, chopped onions, sliced ginger and chopped garlic. Saute for 4-5 minutes on medium flame.
  7. Add ground masala paste and fry for 5-6 minutes.
  8. Now mix the fried prawns and stir for 5-6 minutes.
  9. Add salt and a little water if required. Cook for another 5 minutes on a medium flame.
  10. Once done, switch off the flame and serve.
