Itching is a common and an irritating problem. It may result from a number of causes like allergy, insect bites, weather, pollution, infections, harsh chemicals in soaps and sometimes even medication. The problem of itching is very annoying and can be embarrassing too.
Scratching the affected area may give momentary relief. But it may also lead to skin infection. So, scratching is definitely not recommended if you are suffering from itchy skin.
Scratching damages your skin all the more. Sometimes it even leads to breaking of the skin which makes it prone to dangerous infections. In such a case, one should avoid scratching the itching area at all costs and resort to some other safe remedies. You will be relieved to know that these remedies are easy and readily available in your kitchen cupboard. These simple home remedies for itchy skin are cent percent safe and do not cause any side effects to your skin.

Baking Soda
Baking soda is one of the most common home remedies for itchy skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a natural acid neutralizer. Make a paste by mixing three parts of baking soda with one part of water. Apply this mixture on the affected areas and keep it for half an hour. Then wash it off with water. However, you have to take care that you do not use baking soda or broken skin or open wounds.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal contains antioxidant compounds which has great anti-irritation and a soothing effect on your skin. Using unprocessed oatmeal flour is even more effective in treating itchy skin. Mix the unprocessed oatmeal flour with water to make a smooth paste. Apply this paste all over the itchy area. Cover it with a cloth and let it stay for 30 minutes. Then wash off with water. The irritation will soon be relieved.
Cold Water
The sensations of cold and itch travel through the same nerve cells. Therefore, applying cold water or ice to the itchy areas greatly helps in relieving the irritation.
Lemon
Another good home remedy for itchy skin is lemon. Lemons contain citric and acetic acids which are great antiseptics and have anti-inflammatory properties. So, just squeeze some lemon on the affected area and allow it to dry. Then wash off with cold water. The itching will reduce drastically.
Clove Oil
Clove oil contains eugenol that has the ability to numb the nerve endings. This helps in reducing the itching sensation. Apply a few drops of clove oil to the affected areas and leave it on. The itching will reduce in some time.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is an excellent remedy for itchy skin. It has a cooling effect on skin and is anti-inflammatory. It also contains vitamin E which is excellent for treating burns and itching. If you have an aloe vera plant at home then just cut off a leaf and apply the juice to the itching area. If you do not have a plant then you can apply the aloe vera gel available at the drug stores.
Essential Oils
All essential oils have anti-inflammatory properties. They have a soothing effect on skin which helps in reducing the itching sensations. You can either mix a few drops of these oils in your bath water or you may apply these oils directly to the affected area. Some of the oils which can be used itchy skin: Basil oil, Agrimony oil, Calendula oil, Chamomile oil, Geranium oil etc.
