Lip colour is an integral part of any makeup look. It can make or break any look. It has been around for 5000 years now, with the first recorded use of lip stains by the Sumerians.

From using ground-up gemstones to the latest metallic lip colours, human civilizations all around the world has consistently shown the cultural tendency of decorating ones' lips and eyes. Segueing back to the present times, this season brings in some interesting lip makeup trends and also resurrects some old ones.

list of lip makeup essentials

The sheer glossy lip is definitely making a comeback in 2017. The prevailing matte lip trend is about to take a backseat, although it won't go out of style completely.

The matte lip was seen on the runways but it was the glossy dewy lip that stood out. The prominent make-up artists are unanimous in their vote for bringing this subtle trend back.

After the bold lips of last year, it is time for toning down. Some out-of-the-box looks are also on the scene, such as the glitter lip and lip colour that matches the eyeshadow and the blush - the monochromatic face.

So, here are the top lip makeup trends of 2017. Take a look and know what's in this season.

The Glossy Lip

The Glossy Lip

Dab on some shiny gloss and you are good to go. Dewy glossed up lip has been a favourite of the show-runners this season. Go for hues like rosy pink, magenta, cherry red, etc. There is a significant sway towards the natural pink shade, glammed up with a touch of gloss. Shimmer glosses are also trending, but might not be for everybody. Last year was all about looking like a sculpted goddess, whereas this year is more about the subtle country beauty.

The Glitter Lip

The Glitter Lip

Lightly stained lips with bright shimmer dabbed on top are very popular this year. Cosmetic glitter pots are vanishing off the shelves after bedazzling the runways this season.

Monochromatic Lips

Lips matching the blush and eyeshadow might sound a little over the top, but it works well if done right. Choose a shade of pink or peach, something that goes with the skin undertone. The object of this look is not to create a colour pop but to bring out the undertone.

Lip Liners

Lip Liners

Lip liners can be a great way to achieve stained lips. Fill in your lips with a good creamy lip liner. This lip trend ties in well with the no-makeup look that is being favoured this season.

The Pink Lip

Pink lips have been a common sighting on runways. Creamy and sheer tints of the shade are emerging as some of the favourites of this season.

When Shopping For Lip Makeup

There are a few things to be kept in mind while picking out shades for your pout. The texture, the pigmentation, and the wear are some key points to take into consideration when looking at a product.

Lipsticks

Lipsticks

Since sheer and creamy lipsticks are the two emerging trends at the moment, let us focus on those.

  • When looking for a sheer lipstick, remember that texture is the most important factor. It should glide on smoothly and not give that unsightly white cast that some balmy lipsticks do. As far as pigmentation is concerned, the ones that leave behind a gorgeous stain are always preferable than ones that wipe off completely. Sheer lipsticks will never have as much stay as matte ones do, so do not compare them with matte lipsticks.
    • Now, when looking for creamy lipsticks, it's important to check for bleeding. Lipsticks that bleed onto the skin can be a hassle. No one wants to walk around with lips that belong on the face of a clown. They are usually well pigmented, but a shade that suited you in matte texture may not look as a good in a creamy formula. If this happens, try going a shade down. This will balance the pigmentation against the texture.
Choosing The Right Lip Liners

Choosing The Right Lip Liners

When choosing lip liners, first decide how you intend to use them. If you are going to be filling in lips, then go for creamy liners. They work great on their own as well. You can lightly fill the lips in and smudge with a brush or finger. This will give a very ‘woke-up-looking-like-this' air to your face. If you wish to buy a liner for defining purposes, go for the matte lining pencils. They are by far the best choice to prevent feathering and bleeding.

Lip Gloss

Lip Gloss

This is a summer favourite this year but a little tricky to get right. Finding the correct lip gloss takes some time because whether it will work for you or not depends chiefly on its formula, unlike lipsticks and lip liners, which are saved by their pigmentation even if the texture is not that great. Lip glosses can be epic fails if the texture is not correct for you. Certain lip glosses even leave an ugly white cast on the lips. Therefore, it is imperative that you try out different types before zeroing in on the best match for you.

Lip Brush

Lip Brush

Invest in a good lip brush. Find the one with fairly flexible and soft bristles. In lip brushes, you need the movement as well as the ability to pick up the pigment.

Lip Scrub

Lip Scrub

Prepping the lip before makeup application is important. Using a lip scrub once or twice a week ensures that your pout is rid of all the dead skin cells that lead to chapping. Follow with a good chapstick. Lip exfoliation is often ignored but should not be. It can make all the difference. Invest in a good lip scrub or make one at home. For this, mix one tsp of granulated sugar with one tsp of honey and a few drops of lemon juice.

So in conclusion, it can be said that this year is all about learning some new tricks and reviving a few old ones. Makeup should reflect who you are. Find that balance between the old and new that works for you and most importantly, have fun with it.
